One Min Read: Dealing with Crisis at Work

Facing something like the coronavirus is not something that leaders are trained on in school. With the virus sweeping across the globe, managers are faced with keeping employees safe while dealing with the panic that accompanies a Pandemic. The best organizations deal with it up front and let their employees know their safety is of utmost importance. They communicate openly and often and have a process in place for employees to ask questions. When the thread arises, leaders rise to the occasion and find ways to help minimize the panic.

Many organizations have implemented a process to minimize exposure. Some institute a remote working opportunity for employees which helps on many levels. With schools closing this allows parents to be with their children instead of having to find alternative care. In addition, some organizations have instituted a part time schedule of working from home alternated with coming into the organization. If projects can be postponed, some scheduling issues can be minimized. Organizations find ways to reduce the chance of spread by offering tips as well as hand sanitizers where available. Instructions with hints to sanitize laptops as well as work areas also are helpful. Other organizations are checking employee temperatures as they enter and leave work, but more are asking employees who are under the weather to stay home. By taking the approach to help keep your employees safe you can minimize the spread of any disease and hopefully start habits that people keep long after this pandemic is over, and at the same time help your employees feel cared for.

What people are saying.
Beth Sears provided her time and expertise to assist us in resolving a difficult and emotionally charged situation regarding our next work season in Africa … Beth was able first to empower us to honor the fact that there was major conflict in our thinking and helped us define a process to deal with the differing opinions. … In our final meeting, it was amazing to see the most entrenched and angry member of the group changed their demeanor. We came to a fine resolution and are a stronger body because of the experience. Beth deserves much credit for guiding and encouraging us and giving us the tools to meet our challenges. I recommend her work without hesitation.
