How to Handle Communication Problems When Working Remotely

There are numerous issues that can make communication difficult. Since the pandemic, working remotely has garnered many perks for both the organization and the employees. However, it also creates some challenges.

With more people working remotely, logistical challenges often disrupt communication. Remote employees frequently feel disconnected from the workplace. However, tools like video conferencing and Teams can enhance communication, making it more like face-to-face interaction. To improve this experience, encourage everyone to turn on their cameras. This not only feels more personal but also provides the benefit of nonverbal communication, which can enhance the communication process.

Technology may also present challenges. That’s why you’ll want to ensure your workers have the equipment and technical support to resolve any issues they may be having. Problems like poor internet connections and software glitches can make communicating even more difficult. Ensure your people have the equipment and training to connect with the rest of the team.

It’s also important to connect regularly with your remote workers through scheduled, 1:1 meetings. This is helpful to clear up any faulty perceptions of requirements. With international workers, challenges with time zones and cultural differences can cause additional barriers to accurate communication. Your effort to connect and understand each other should improve the teamwork aspect and morale.

Whenever possible, it’s helpful to bring your employees face-to-face at least once a quarter.

Communication can be difficult in the best of circumstances. Working remotely can make it even harder to ensure that the intended message is the message received. In these instances, additional care needs to be taken to minimize the chance of miscommunication.

Your Challenge This Week:

Make sure there are processes in place that meet your organization’s needs and minimize communication problems with your remote workers.

What people are saying.
Beth Sears provided her time and expertise to assist us in resolving a difficult and emotionally charged situation regarding our next work season in Africa … Beth was able first to empower us to honor the fact that there was major conflict in our thinking and helped us define a process to deal with the differing opinions. … In our final meeting, it was amazing to see the most entrenched and angry member of the group changed their demeanor. We came to a fine resolution and are a stronger body because of the experience. Beth deserves much credit for guiding and encouraging us and giving us the tools to meet our challenges. I recommend her work without hesitation.
