A Turtle’s Demise

While golfing with friends my husband told of a turtle that was captured by an alligator. The turtle was looking around and at one point momentarily got away. All too soon, however, the alligator threw the turtle in the air and it became lunch. Being trapped like that must have been terrifying, and there really was no way out. You, however, do have options even though it may not seem like it. Do you feel trapped in your job? Are you truly trapped or is that your belief? There are signs that the job you are in is not for you. Do you get up in the morning and dread going to work?  Is your work interesting and challenging to you? Are you utilizing your gifts to help the organization reach their vision? Are you losing sleep or getting sick a lot?

If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, then make a plan. The only thing worse than working in a job you hate for 5 years is to be there 5 more. Here are some things to think about:

  • Unless your boss is asking you to do something illegal, do not quit in a huff. Instead start building skills to find your dream job.
  • Build your professional network. Ask others about the culture of their organization and take notes. Connect with people online who have similar goals.
  • In haste, never put anything negative about your current employer or controversial on your social media pages.
  • Start taking advantage of classes and training opportunities. You can even and ask for more responsibility.

With a little planning and networking, you may find that dream job you are looking for and at the very least you can build your resume and perhaps find a better position at your current location. The key is to plan and not stay there until, much like the turtle, it is your demise.

What people are saying.
Beth Sears provided her time and expertise to assist us in resolving a difficult and emotionally charged situation regarding our next work season in Africa … Beth was able first to empower us to honor the fact that there was major conflict in our thinking and helped us define a process to deal with the differing opinions. … In our final meeting, it was amazing to see the most entrenched and angry member of the group changed their demeanor. We came to a fine resolution and are a stronger body because of the experience. Beth deserves much credit for guiding and encouraging us and giving us the tools to meet our challenges. I recommend her work without hesitation.
