Difficult People – What Are They Teaching You?

Wow …. Lessons from difficult people? Is that possible? More importantly, what are the difficult people teaching you about yourself!!! Why not use those difficult people to learn about ourselves? I truly believe when we do not learn lessons, the universe keeps sending similar situations to us. It may come initially as a tap on the shoulder, and if you ignore it, a nudge by a similar individual, but if you don’t pay any attention, you may get what feels like a 2×4! Pay attention to the lessons these people are there to teach you.

For example, I have been listening to a mediation about the mirror in your life. Whatever your difficult person does, is it possible you do the same thing to others? When someone does something that drives you crazy, ask yourself if you may have similar behaviors in your interactions with others. Broaden your perspective to the possibility that you also have those difficult qualities. Take time to think about all of your relationships and determine if that is how you choose to be. Once you fully accept that you may have similar tendencies, you can resolve them.

Next, what pushes your buttons? Why is this an issue and could it be because of unresolved issues or fears you have not dealt with? It is difficult to see ourselves objectively, but what messages did you receive that you have not resolved? The next time your button gets pushed, take a deep breath and ask yourself why is it an issue for you?

Finally, learn from your difficult people and gain a better understanding of yourself. Once you acknowledge areas in which you may be difficult, you can resolve them and become more of who you hope to be. Use the experience as a chance for growth!

Beth Sears provided her time and expertise to assist us in resolving a difficult and emotionally charged situation regarding our next work season in Africa … Beth was able first to empower us to honor the fact that there was major conflict in our thinking and helped us define a process to deal with the differing opinions. … In our final meeting, it was amazing to see the most entrenched and angry member of the group changed their demeanor. We came to a fine resolution and are a stronger body because of the experience. Beth deserves much credit for guiding and encouraging us and giving us the tools to meet our challenges. I recommend her work without hesitation.
