PTBD – A Horrific Affliction

You hear the door open and sink low to become as small as possible as not to reap the wrath of your director. Past experience has helped you to know that the pattern of their footstep tells you they were on the warpath. You can think of nothing else until you are sure it is not your turn. Not that you want it to be anyone else, but you find yourself breathing a sigh of relief when you hear the inevitable fury unleashed on a co-worker. You know your lament of relief is only temporary as this scene will likely play out time and again before the day is over.

In speaking with employees working in an abusive situation, some report crying during their morning commute. Others indicate their health has taken a toll. In addition, once home, after what seemed like an endless day, employees often report that it takes them time to adjust to ensure their family does not pay for the experience of their day.

You have probably all heard of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTSD) disorder which is defined according to the Mayo Clinic as “A mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Most people who go through traumatic events may have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping” When you think of PTSD you often think of the ravages of war or rape, but most recently 3 clients have mentioned these symptoms resulting from a boss! This I have named PTBD or Posttraumatic Boss Disorder!

Working for an abusive boss can be life changing and not in a good way. First find if there are other options in your organization. Never put yourself in harm’s way but consider discussing your experience with your boss. Research has indicated that often these bosses are stunned with how people perceive them and sometimes it shocks them into changing their behavior. They also may respect some push back. If this does not work, start gathering information and discuss it with HR. Usually there are others who experience the same things so try to leverage the power of a group. Finally, if all else fails look for other options. Life is too short to live like this 8 hours a day and you may indeed be shortening your life, so take steps to take care of yourself.

  1. Sounds like a very fundable research proposal. All we need is a questionnaire, and we will collect enormous data from all over the world. Then we will present it at a psychiatry meeting and propose the criteria for the new diagnosis.

Beth Sears provided her time and expertise to assist us in resolving a difficult and emotionally charged situation regarding our next work season in Africa … Beth was able first to empower us to honor the fact that there was major conflict in our thinking and helped us define a process to deal with the differing opinions. … In our final meeting, it was amazing to see the most entrenched and angry member of the group changed their demeanor. We came to a fine resolution and are a stronger body because of the experience. Beth deserves much credit for guiding and encouraging us and giving us the tools to meet our challenges. I recommend her work without hesitation.
