Wise Choices with Political Conversations

With family gathering during the holidays, a good way to add to the stress is to start a political conversation. With so much angst regarding the current political landscape, it is best to choose not to enter into debates. People have a right to their opinions regardless if it is different than yours. Many people want to get you to change your mind. With alcohol at many parties and gatherings, it is best to leave politics at home.

What do you do, however, when a family member brings up a controversial or political issue? First, one person can’t argue, so it is up to you not to take bate and enter a debate. Some of these comments can help you to avoid an altercation:

  • “I appreciate your viewpoint of the current situation and I have decided to keep conversations on a neutral topic.”
  • “I just saw Jane and want to go greet her.”
  • “I can’t speak to that and it is so nice to be at this celebration. How do you know the Smiths?”
  • “I enjoy gatherings like this. What memories of Christmas in the past do you have and why is that special to you?”

By avoiding getting into the discussion, you can help to keep the mood of the day positive. If someone insists, keep restating your position of not entering political conversations. Keep your tone positive and smile. Draw their attention to children or others in attendance and do not take the bait. It will make it more enjoyable for everyone.

Beth Sears provided her time and expertise to assist us in resolving a difficult and emotionally charged situation regarding our next work season in Africa … Beth was able first to empower us to honor the fact that there was major conflict in our thinking and helped us define a process to deal with the differing opinions. … In our final meeting, it was amazing to see the most entrenched and angry member of the group changed their demeanor. We came to a fine resolution and are a stronger body because of the experience. Beth deserves much credit for guiding and encouraging us and giving us the tools to meet our challenges. I recommend her work without hesitation.
