4 Keys to Leading in Uncertain Times

We are in unchartered waters and this is unlike anything we have ever faced. Your people are looking toward you for leadership. The rules are different, and you cannot respond as you normally would. Trust me communication has never been more important than it is now. In times of increased anxiety, it disrupts people expectations which increases their stress and anxiety. The mental noise it creates distorts a person’s ability to process information, so you need to communicate more often and repeat information. Leaders need to communicate in a manner that will allow your people to know that you have their back. Let’s look at 4 keys to leading during these uncertain times.

People need to know you care: Let your people know you genuinely care about them. Continue to educate them on what they can do to keep themselves safe. Try to put yourself in your employees’ shoes and show empathy. Ask them how they are doing, then sincerely listen to their answers, and listen to understand not just respond. I have heard we are all in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Some of your people are struggling with children, home schooling, concern for elderly parents, and unemployed partners. The stress can be overwhelming. Be a role model during this difficult time and demonstrate high levels of emotional intelligence, meaning think through how your words might affect people. There is no perfect way to communicate during difficult times, so keep working to maintain trust and help your people know you care.

Use inclusive language: As changes occur in your business it is imperative that leaders are communicating in a timely manner. Trust me, your grapevine is alive and well and communication is taking place via rumor. It is important that you provide frequent updates to everyone to keep everyone informed and give them accurate information. It is helpful to use inclusive language, like “we” in your sentences and provide useful information to help your people who are probably concerned about the future. “We will get through this together” or “We are an incredible team that rises to the occasion.” Some people feel very isolated and this will help remind them that they are part of your team.

Ensure your people have accurate information: During the rising anxieties regarding COVID, it is important to know who to turn to for information. Select one person in your organization as the go-to person to minimize rumors and information coming from a variety of sources. This should be someone in a leadership position, and it is important that your leadership team come together to determine what needs to be communicated. To guide people to the right person, you can frame your statement with, “In an effort to ensure everyone receives the same information, _____________ has been designated as the point person and you can reach them at _____________. In most cases it would be helpful if this were a top person in the reporting structure, and if not, explain why. This can help to control the chaos.

Emerge stronger: As crazy as these times are there are lessons and opportunities of which to take advantage. What are you learning about your organization? Yourself? How can you use this information to create innovative solutions that will allow you to emerge stronger? Are there things you currently do that you can alter? The best organizations, and those who will emerge the strongest, focus on the future and what needs to be done to not only survive, but thrive. It is the difficult times that separate a mediocre leader from the best. In times of crisis your leadership abilities are put to the test. Those leaders who learn to engage their people and maintain a positive attitude, will emerge with a higher level of respect and a more productive team.
